2021

The ChemicalYouth website is a digital platform designed to present and organize an ongoing research project on the use of chemicals in everyday life. It reflects the experimental and evolving nature of the research, bringing together fieldwork materials, publications, and ongoing investigations. Conceived as a dynamic environment, the platform grows over time, allowing new content to be added and connected as the project develops.

ChemicalYouth is a research project investigating the pervasive use of chemicals in everyday life, focusing on how substances such as pills, drinks, sprays, and powders shape the experiences of contemporary youth. Drawing on medical anthropology and science and technology studies, the project explores the “lived effects” of chemicals, combining their material properties with users’ expectations, practices, and social contexts. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork conducted across multiple countries, the research offers a situated perspective on how chemicals affect bodies, behaviors, and cultures.
